Outlook Express 6 - Importing

When I try to import to Outlook Express 6, I get the
Other Addresses interface, with text file and other types
of import formats. There are two buttons: import and
close. When I click text file and then import, I do not
get a browse interface asking me for the name and
location of my import file. Instead, it thinks for about
30 or 40 seconds, then comes back saying "error in
import". I am not surprised since it gace no opportunity
to input the file name.

Any ideas?

What are you trying to import, a TXT (CSV) file?

Is MS Outlook or Office also installed?

Yes, a txt (csv) file exported from Outlook Express on my
old laptop. Yes MS Outlook and Office are installed on
the target machine. I do not want to use MS Outlook - I
prefer O Express. It does not get past the file type.
Regardless of the type of import format I chose from the
import list, the same result occurs: it thinks for a
little while, then errors out. It never gives an
opportunity to input the name or location of the import
file.

Thanks for any light you can shine.

Is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set to 1 (one)?

If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with Outlook, even if
you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office). Change the value
to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and all should be well.
(If that DWORD is not present, don't create it.)[/QUOTE]

Good try, thanks. But although the key exists, the
variable you refer to doesn't. Also, there doesn't appear
to be any problem with Outlook Express actually bringing
up the address book. I have received two e-mails on my
new laptop and responded to both, and Outlook Express has
properly stuck the two correspondents' email info into
the contacts folder. It is importing to the contacts
folder that is problematic.

Thanks for your efforts though.

Assuming there's nothing wrong with the CSV file you're attempting to
import, the Address Book associated with your current identity may be
damaged. Create a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity) and
try importing the CSV file into its Address Book. Assuming all is well,
import messages from the old Identity before deleting it
(File>Identities>Manage Identities), and import contacts from the old
Address Book (or, in the new Address Book, drag them from Shared Contacts
[View>Folders and Groups] into the main group).

If the CSV doesn't import into the new identity's Address Book, the CSV is
corrupted.

I appreciate all your efforts. I'll potter around over
the Christmas break. If the worst comes to the worst,
since I have the CSV file, and there are probably only
from 15 to 20 addresses in it, I can just cut and paste
them in.

Thanks again,
Have a great Holiday. Frank
