Help, I just upgraded 35 workstations from Windows 98 to
Windows 2K, keeping the existing version of Office 2K for
now. 34 installed without error. However I have 1
machine, that keeps giving me a program error -
outlook.exe.

I did go to the kb and followed the initialize in /safe
and Outlook does initialize that way.

I have deleted the existing profiles and recreated,
uninstalled, reinstalled, etc.

Word/Excel - working fine. Just can't get around the
Outlook.exe error and shutdown - can anyone tell me
exactly what to delete and clean to reinstall Outlook 2K +
SR 3 - to get this up and running !!!

Thanks much ! - Julie

It would be helpful if you stated what the error was to avoid responses
like... have you uninstalled Office 2000, run Eraser2K from the Microsoft
site, reboot, and then reinstall?

<lol> so the error message was "error". wonderful... very helpful. Might
want to take a look in the event logs to see if anything useful was posted.

.
Where is the event log ?

Update for help!

The full error message:
Program Error
OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart program.

I reviewed the error log. I could only find the orginal
log by doing a search for *.log on C:\ - found outlook
startup log.

Nothing looks bad, should I be looking for anything in
particular ?

I can run outlook.exe /safe. So I have created a shortcut
using that command vs. just outlook.exe

Can use outlook but seem to have lost the preview pane
option, not sure if this is related.

History:
Have completely uninstalled reinstalled
Have used the uninstall.exe download from Microsoft
Have delete the Profile sub folder in registry
Have deleted the profile and recreated a clean one
Have deleted the mapi32.dll file (renamed) and reinstalled
outlook.
Have performed a repair and full reinstall
But can't seem to overcome error when trying to execute
outlook.exe

Will I have any problems going forward just running
outlook.exe /safe ?

Thanks - Julie

You can run Outlook in safe mode but you will need to understand that it
doesn't allow certain things to load (e.g. preview pane, addins, custom
menus/toolbars, views, .etc) Since Outlook does start in safe mode, you can
start with some of the easier stuff.

1) rename/delete outcmd.dat (custom menu/toolbar tracking file)
2) rename/delete extend.dat (used ot optimize loading of addins. u would
still want to see what addins are being loaded/used via tools | options |
other | advanced options)
3) start outlook 1 time with the /cleanviews command line switch
4) start outlook 1 time with the /cleanfreebusy command line switch
(delete/regenerates free/busy)
5) start outlook 1 time with the /cleanreminders command line switch
(delete/regenerate reminders)
6) first message that outlook tries to show in preview pane may be corrupt
(move/delete the item)
