I installed Norton Antivirus two weeks ago and since then I'm not able
anymore to startup Outlook. A friend of mine discoverd that in the
Application Data no more pst.file was available.
I have Windows XP and Office 2007 Entreprise edition.

When I startup my Outlook I get an error message stating that Outlook hadn't
been closed down properly and if I want to startup in Save Mode. Now, this
doesn't work and the screen asks me to send info about this case to Microsoft.
Anyone out there, who can help me?

Tasha, do not follow this moron's advice. You should PLONK him because he
is a convicted pimp and child abuser. People have outed him under Megan's
Law.

Have you tried using Office diagnostics using any of the office
applications? Sometimes this solves most of the problems of short cuts and
what not.

Also, please tell us exactly whether you get any error messages when you try
to launch Outlook 2007.

If the installation of Norton's program stopped Outlook from working, then it
IS good advice (despite what "ybS2okj" - someone so "expert" he will not admit
to who he is - says) to uninstall that program to determine if it is, in fact,
the problem. It is WELL documented that many AV programs and Norton's in
particular, conflict with Outlook. When you install an AV program, it's not
necessary to install the mail scanning feature. It does not make you safer
and it it is very likely to cause mail transmission problems.

Do you get any error messages when you try to start Outlook? If so, post
theie EXACT text.

You should check to see if your Outlook PST is there. Open Windows Explorer
and enter this into the Address field:

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Click Go. That will open the folder where Outlook creates PSTs by default.
See if you see an "Outlook Data File". If you have known file types set
hidden, you won't see the ".pst" file type, but you should still see the PST.

Dear All,
Dear Brian,

As soon as I click the outlook button, outlook starts, then stops saying
that it needs to be run in safe mode (YES/NO option). In either case, the
software stops working, no real error code. So I contacted a friend to see
what happened. He figured out that the pst file was gone.
He was able though to create a mail with the editor function of microsoft,
he checked if he could change maps and yes the computer gave my original
mailbox configuration. It showed even that I have new mail. Now I checked
again and in my application data/.../outlook map are just the following
documents:
outcmd.dat, outlook.nk2, outlook.xml, outlook.srs, outlPrnt
So no .pst file. Where can this be gone (considering the fact that it should
exist somewhere). Anyone?

By the way I checked the error message I get and clicked on error report:
these are too long to include here. Or is this text usefull
Appname: outlook.exe AppVer 12.0.6514.5000 AppStamp: 4a89dc70 Modname
mspst32.dll ModVer 12.06514.5000 ModStamp 4a89d536 fDebug 0 Offset: 0001e19e

I m nearly desperate

Dear Brian,

I tried a new thing for me... I copied the link you gave me and suddenly I
found my pst file back amongst my other maps in my mailbox (hotmail,
archive,...) :) So I know my info is still somewhere out there... I copied
the info to a new folder (so I have a backup of my mails). :)

So what do you suggest I d do now?

Outlook displays an explicit message that it can't open its folders if the PST
is missing. It doesn't just hang. Your friend doesn't know what he's doing.

That's because the folder containing the files you name is NOT the folder that
normally contains PSTs. He looked in the wrong location. He looked in
%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook, which is NOT the folder I told you to open. Open
the folder I already told you using the method I told you.

I already said what I think you should do: uninstall your AV program and
reinstall it without the mail scanning feature. You should reboot your
computer after uninstalling the AV program and before reinstalling it. For
added checking, scan your PST with the Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, found
in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12 and allow it to repair any errors.
Then try to open Outlook. If it still fails, then create a new mail profile
and add your existing PST to it. See this:
