I am using Outlook 2003. How can I name a distribution group and have the
full name of the group appear in my contact list? The only thing evident is
the distribution symbol, but the name of the group does not appear.

When the dialog for creating a personal distribution list appears, you should see a Name field, where you'll enter the name.

Sue,
yes, I did that and it does not display in my contact list. I have named
several distribution lists, when I display my contact list, the names do not
appear, only the distribution list symbol

Tell us more about "my contact list." That could mean several different things. What list are you looking at?

when I go into Microsoft Outlook, I click on "Contacts" which brings up my
contacts and my distribution lists. If I have created a contact, the
person's name is there, but if I have created a distribution list (and named
it), the name of the distribution list does not appear.
