2 questions:

I just upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2003 and have imported my outlook
..pst file. Once installed it showed all the distribution lists however when
rebooted the contents disappeared and only the list names were shown. I
discovered that if I reimported my contacts and saved each list separately
prior to rebooting the complete lists were shown but now when I try to view
the properties of any item within the list I receive a message that says they
are not regognized as contacts - any suggestions?

Additionally when using Outlook 2000 when I viewed the properties of a given
contact included on the 'other' tab was a list of all the distribution lists
this contact was included on. I have been unable to find this same feature
in 2003. How can I view this information though individual contacts?

Membership in a DL is not a Contact property.

You have verified one of the many reasons why importing is never the correct
way to transfer Outlook data. DL's do not survive importing, and a lot of
other data doesn't either.
The correct way to transfer data is simply to reuse the same Outlook data
file, or to open the old data file and copy data directly from it.

ok - not quite clear on how to do that - I am trasferring data from an old
computer to a new one - I've got my original pst file on disc - if I don't
import it into Outlook how do I get Outlook to use the old data?

regarding contact properties - have 6000 plus contacts - is there no way to
view what distribution lists a client is linked to without scrolling through
all the DLs?

The Help files tell you how to do this:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

No. There is no way to look at a Contact Record and see what DL's they
belong to. DL's are a very unreliable method for grouping Contacts. Few of
us use them. Categories work better.

Just to add to what Russ said earlier, it sounds like you may not have had
real Outlook distribution lists in Outlook 2000 at all. You apparently were
using Outlook in Internet Mail Only mode, which borrows the interface from
the Windows Address Book and lets you create "groups." Those groups are in
the WAB, not stored in Outlook.

And as Russ already told you, Outlook contacts keep no record of what DL(s)
each is involved with.

thank you for the info - yes this sounds correct - can I use the same set up
in Outlook 2003? Trying to figure out the best way to manage mailing lists...

thank you I will try that.

No. The WAB interface was a confusing kludge that did not survive past
Outlook 2000.
