Outlook can't find Word to use as email editor

I use Word as my e-mail editor, and after many years, all
of a sudden Outlook refuses to cooperate. I am using
Office 2000. I get the error message, "This form
requires Word as your e-mail editor, but Word is either
busy or cannot be found. The form will be opened in the
Outlook editor instead." Of course, Word is not busy and
easy to find. I tried various combinations of starting and
closing Word and selecting Word from Outlook. Recently I
have been getting the message, "would you like to use Word
as your e-mail editor?" first, and then it tries to start
Word before I get the message saying it cannot be found.
At least now it is trying. But still .... no banana.

I checked for advice on the Web, and several sources
pointed to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article # 166050,
which says that somehow Outlook is using a Word viewer
instead of the real MS Word, and describes how to
uninstall the Viewer. Well, I did not knowingly install
the Viewer and it is nowhere to be found on my computer.
One source said it might mean that the email.dot file is
not in the correct place - I checked this and this also
was not the case, although someone in a tech forum said it
worked for him. Likewise, another suggestion was to rename
the "frmcache.dat" file -- one person reported this
worked, but I tried it and it did not work on my computer.

Any ideas of what I can try next or a likely source of
good advice to solve this problem?

Try running Detect and Repair from the Help menu of any Office program.

Thank you for the suggestion. I just gave it a try, but
unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. Any other
ideas?

I appreciate your help!

You may try doing a search on your hard drive
for NORMAL.DOT

Delete all that you find.
(It will rebuild itself)
