Whenever I send an e-mail with an attachment from my home
PC using Outlook, it arrives at my office inbox with
a .dat extension, regardless of the original file format.

I just sent two files in separate e-mails: one an Excel
file and the other a PowerPoint file. They both arrived
here named Winmail.dat. I could not open either one in
their native programs and when I viewed them in Wordpad
they were predominantly garbage. I could not retrieve
enough datad to reconstruct the Excel file and the
PowerPoint was beyond hope.

Is there soemthing wrong with my Outlook config? Is it my
ISP or possibly the gateway at the office. I have sent
files using hotmail and excite to my offcie address and
have not had this problem.

You must have set your message format to RTF. Set it to plain text or HTML.

Hi Ed,

The problem you are experiencing with the winmail.dat attachments can occur if you send the mail in "RichText" format to servers that do not support this type of format. When a
message containing TNEF information is received by a mail client that does not understand TNEF, an attachment is created with the name Winmail.dat. In some cases, the mail server
will look for and strip out the TNEF and Winmail.dat information.

I would like to recommend that you follow the steps below to change the mail format to HTML or Plain Text to solve the problem.

1. Click "Tools" --> "Options...".
2. Select "HTML" or "Plain Text" on the "Send in this message format:" list under the "Mail Format" tab.

I have the same issue with sending to a client of ours.
However, I have checked and am sending plain text. I
have also checked the address book and that is set to
plain text, as well as the global contact on the Exchange
server itself.

Any other place the setting might be?

Thanks

Elizabeth
