Outlook Outlook attachments stop working

I am working with a Dell Vostro laptop with Windows XP. After working with Outlook mail for a couple of hours I cannot get attachments to work. The icon is not highlighted and when I do get it to highlight and click on it I get My Documents screen but it is blank. I have to shut down the laptop to get it to work. Any suggestions

You don't say wether you are getting any messages up..By default Outlook will block some attatchments..Go HERE for all your answers.....
 
Thanks for the reply. The issue is that I cannot access any attachments to include with messages I want to send out. After some time in Outlook the icon goes from dark to gray and I cannot get attachments. Hope this clears the issue up.
