Outlook archives to Mail

Like we are told to do, I backed up AND archived all my Outlook 2003 messages
to a separate hard disk before a clean install of Vista. I then find that I
can't get these messages or archives into Mail using the transfer wizard.
Anyone any ideas?

How did you back up Outlook?
Did you just save the .pst file?
If so, Windows Mail can attempt to import your messages
directly--File/Import/Messages/Microsoft Outlook.
If you intend to use Outlook in Vista, you can replace the .pst file created
during the install of Office with your old one.

Thanks - tried this, but I get an error message - *Messages cannot be
imported from the MAPI file*

I don't know what that means - is there anyway around it?

I think you have to have Outlook installed on the Vista machine and then
import from that.

Yep - that's it. I seems as if that is the only way. I reinstalled Outlook
2003, and will be using that.
Thanks Steve, much appreciated.

II have outlook on Vista installed and I can't get the import to work either
(backup.pst file). Keeps comlainin about the MAPI service not initializing
ior is not there. It's Outlook 2002.

Any other suggestions to try?

I just purchased a new PC with Vista. My old PC has Outlook 2003. I would
like to get the e-mail messages from my old PC imported into Windows Mail. I
don't plan on installing Outlook 2003 on my Vista PC. Is there some way to
get Outlook 2003 e-mails imported into Windows Mail without installing
Outlook? In another post there was the suggestion to export the messages from
Outlook to Outlook Express, but I don't see that as an option when I attempt
the export.

In OE go to File | Import | Messages and choose Outlook and see if you can
import that way. Then in Vista you can import from the OE message store.

Thanks, that worked.

None of the above work on Vista 64-bit. 3rd-party convesion programs also
don't work. Key problem appears to be that Vista 64-bit does not have the
MAPI protocol available to WIndows mail. Outlook 2002 does work, so it's
strange that Windows Mail can't get at it.

Well, on Vista 64-bit, outlook import doesn't seem to recognize dbx file. It
give the choice of OE6 Identity or OE6 Store directory. When browsing for
either one, it fails to find any qualifying files.

The answer above worked, but assumes you have a clue (I don't, as least as
far as Outlook Express 6 is concerned, which I've never used).

Here's how I did it, moving files from Outlook on my old XP computer to
Windows Mail on my new Vista machine, step by step, for the rest of us:

1) Open your old Outlook and look over what folders you want to copy over.
Note: any folders in the Archive Folder in Outlook will not appear on the
import folder list. See the last step about these.

2) Open Outlook Express 6. This program comes with Internet Explorer 6 SP1,
free to download with it - you should have it on your machine, or can get it
by updating to IE6 SP1
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx).

3) You can import from Outlook to Outlook Express 6. Go to "File | Import |
Messages..." and import from Outlook. Choose the folders you want to import
or just select Import All.

3.5 - optional) If you made archive files with Outlook, you may have noticed
that these did not appear in the Outlook Express 6 import list. Only files in
your main outlook.pst file will appear. Here's what I did: go find your
Outlook .pst path. Rename outlook.pst to outlook_original.pst or whatever you
like, then rename archive.pst (or whatever other .pst files you have) to
outlook.pst. Now do step #3 again, and import the files in the archive in
this way. Repeat as needed. Don't forget to rename the files back so your old
Outlook will let you see your email.

4) Once everything is in Outlook Express 6, go to "Tools | Options..." and
click on the Maintenance tab. Click on the "Store Folder..." button. A
directory will be shown in the dialog. Copy this directory location (however
you wish). Close down Outlook Express 6.

5) Open a file explorer and go to this directory. Copy all the files in here
over to your Vista computer, into some temporary directory. The method used
is your choice: network, CD, whatever. Experts: you might want to skip this
step and try using this directory when importing - see step 7 and my warning
there.

6) Start up Windows Mail on Vista (and set up the account, etc.). Go to
"File | Import | Messages...", then select "Outlook Express 6". Hit Next. The
bottom option, "Import mail from an OE6 store directory" should be the only
option available. Hit OK.

7) Here's the part that had me stuck for awhile, "Location of Messages". Hit
"Browse..." and go find your temporary directory from step 5. Select it. The
utterly confusing bit is "No files match your search" displayed on the right.
Just hit "Select Folder". You might also hit a snag with the browse path -
examine it at this point. If it has the temporary directory path but the last
folder name in the path is repeated (e.g.
"C:\Users\Cathy\Document\TempImport\TempImport", then Browse again. The trick
is to select the folder in the right-hand list, but to not double-click on
it. Also note: I tried shortcutting early on, setting this directory to the
Outlook Express 6 directory in step 5 and import over the network, but this
failed for some reason.

8) Once you hit "Next", you should now be able to import All folders, etc.
Enjoy! You'll probably want to reorganize the folders once imported. Happily,
moving folders around in Windows Mail is pretty snappy.

I hope this helps. I'm no expert, but after having spent way too much time
trying to do what should be simple (going from one Microsoft product to
another), I felt obligated to attempt to help others out.
