Outlook and the Preview Pain

I am new to XPproSP2-Outlook from Win98se-Outlook
Express. I have ALWAYS kept the PreviewPane turned off so
that malicious email, spam and virus payloads could not
Auto Respond/Load/Install. There is no point for the
preview pane to default to open. In XPproSP2-Outlook I
have to reset the preview pane to close for every new
folder I create.

Is there any way to disable this incredibly dangerous
default?

I receive many various attachments in my business and XP
defaults to ignoring most of them - I need to have the
attachment list nuetered - we have excellent anti-virus
disciplines/policies without the need for any "auto-
protect" features.
