(before we get started, can I tell you how much I HATE the auto updates...
Everytime Microsoft downloads some critical update to my system and installs
it.. something stops working....!!!!!)

Ok.. here is my problem.... Outlook 2003 professional is installed on my
Desktop. For 2 years, it has sync'd with my Dell Axim PDA. Tonight,
Autoupdate wanted to install some malicious software prevention update... and
now... Active Sync reports the following message... "Microsoft Outlook is no
longer installed, so Active Sync cannot continue to run. To continue
synchronization, reinstall Microsoft Outlook." It is installed and opertes
fine... I can see 2 years worth of messages and tasks and notes.... I con't
want to install outlook again... and have to start reconfiguring all the
rules and setup.... ANY clue on how I can get this functioning again...?
Please send e-mail to (e-mail address removed) in the event I can't find my way
back into this forum..... THANKS..!

Hi,
I cannot help you with ActiveSync, but I will try to ease your worries.

1.- ActiveSync tells you that OL is not installed. Have you tried running
OL? Does it run? If not, what happens?

2.- If you go to the WinUpdates website you can look at the history of the
updates installed on your PC. After taking not of the last one(s) performed,
you can go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the updates in question. This
should bring you closer to solving a pb caused by them.

3.- Even if OL was uninstalled--highly doubtful-- or damaged/corrupted you
could always search for and back up the *.pst file where all is saved. Try
doing this backup regularly... consider what is the max amount of time you
are willing to lose and then set that as your backup interval.

I sure hope you found your way back here, and good luck.

Cheers,
Alphonse

Thanks for the response...

Outlook runs fine... sends and receives messages and all looks normal.

Thanks for the suggestion about the "winupdates" website. Never heard of it.
Can you give me the complete URL...?

I do backup the .pst from time to time... and archive it. Does the .pst also
backup all my rules for junkmail, rules for message sorting, configuration
info, etc....?

and one more shot against hte root cause of this problem... Anyone know how
to suggest to MS that it would be nice if they described the auto-updates
being installed before they actually install...? I seems that 1 out of 3
times the updates hose something...

THANKS again..

Start, All Programs, at the very top is Windows Update. Once there, on the
left-hand column is Review your update history.

Auto-updates... Control Panel, Security Center, Automaic Updates, tick
Download but let me choose...
When you get notified about an update ready to install, click on the taskbar
icon, and click Custom on the window that opens. This will give you the
descriptions.

Yes, the rules go along with.
