I got a malicious virus on my system, and after cleaning it up, I cannot get
outlook to start up again. Here is the message:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open th Outlook window. the
set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file
C:\users\aiden\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and
all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool
(Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more
information about the Inbox repair tool, see help.

I cannot open Outlook to use the repair tool; any suggestions on a fix
before I have to reinstall?

You cannot run the repair tool if Outlook is open
Start scanpst.exe and browse to the data file (outlook.pst)
Run scanpst.exe several times if it fixes any errors

I'm typing scanpst.exe in the run line, but the computer is telling me "file
not found". Any additional suggestions?

Thank you Diane;
It looks like my PST file is gone. Must have been hit by the virus too.
Disappointing, but I guess I'll have to reinstall everything unless there are
any other solutions anyone can offer.

Diane,
After some extensive searching, I found where the .pst files went, and was
able to fix Outlook.
Thanks so much for the help!

In Windows Explorer, for Outlook 2003, enter this in the Address bar:

%CommonProgramFiles%\System\MSMAPI\1033

Press Enter and locate scanpst.exe. Double-click it. For Outlook 2007, use
this location for scanpst.exe instead:

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12
