Greetings,

I am using Outlook 2002 as a part of Office XP on a W98se OS, P4 2gig
processor, 640 Mb Sdram, 40 gig HDD. I have made fast find, and Ctfmon
"unavailable" as well as disabling MO Search. Never the less, resources drop
to a ridiculously low 50% system, 50% user, 68% GDI when the PC has been
running for but a short time. Background programs/startup programs are but
few (AVG AV, printray stuff, vol control, firewall in Systray) and resources
are released readily with OE6 and almost any other program, or when
"refreshed". But Outlook 2002, that's another story altogether. Once that
application is open, resources stay low until it is closed. Is that
customary with this program?

Suggestions and observations on this would be welcomed. Thanks.

"Neo",

I appreciate your taking your time to reply to my question. I am uncertain
as to whether that should be regarded as a compliment or a real suggestion
to remedy my situation, Neo.<G>Whilst I realize that XP has distinct
advantages over 98/SE such as the NTFS, and the way of allocating resources
and releasing these resources, amongst a few other more outward related
functions, it also harbors a few things that I am less than favorably
disposed to.

Whatever the case may be, I appreciate your link, but perhaps I was
misunderstood. I don't believe I am out of memory; It's the resources that
run low in very short order.

Still, the question remains; Does Ms Outlook consume far too much in the way
of resources, or is there something else (aside from installing XP) that I
have overlooked? Are there any persons left on the planet using W98/Se with
Outlook 2002 that have any such experience with/about that which I have
inquired?

Thanks,
LuckyStrike ;-)

"Neo",

Thanks for your persistence on this. I have set MaxFileCache to 80% of RAM
at 524288 Kb. The other items that are of an unknown "quantity" are the code
of the Printer. I don't really know if it is well written or not. I have
Outlook fairly stripped down, but there are a lot of Fonts of course.

I'll look into your suggestions a little further and see what I may be able
to ascertain regarding the other programs.

Thanks for your help.

I wish I could confirm or deny what others claim, but unfortunately the most
RAM resources I have seen Outlook take through normal use is 40MB. In this
particular case, I am still leaning toward a direction that the low
resources shortly after a boot and application launch is more to vcache,
maxfilecache, and the agp aperture taking most of the system area. Once
that happens, it leaves very little space for the programs which give the
appearance of resources dropping quickly.

Outside of that, the only other things you can check if you think Outlook is
consuming a large amount of resources is to limit what addins load. Perhaps
you have an addin or supporting hardware driver (printer, video, .etc) that
was poorly written and is leaking resources.

As you are an MVP and I am not I am at a loss to counter your assertion that
98 cannot support large memory, but there are others who might have some
disagreement with that. 640Mb is not an inordinately large amount of RAM,
IMHO. Win98/se can be configured to accept much larger quantities than that.
There is no need for me to include other MSKB articles to support this
