Outlook 98 does not have this option. You will need to turn off the option
to mark items read when xx seconds have passed or when the message focus
changes. Then, display the Tracking Option column to show which mails have
a read receipt. Delete them without reading, although this will generate a
"deleted without being read" receipt.
Alternatively, you can get WatchYourBack! which will remove read receipts
and prevent a message going back to the sender. It is very handy and
inexpensive -
