Outlook 97 on Windows XP not checking for new messages

In Tools, Options, Internet Mail, I have nominated to check for new messages
every 1 minute, but it doesn't check for new emails until I click on Tools,
Check for New Mail. How do I get it to automatically check for new email
messages? (I have already recently Downloaded Value Pack 1 & installed it.)
 
Try setting to 10mins, 1min is unlikely to work.
Since email is not an instant media it wont make any difference
