For a couple of years I have successfully used Office 97 Pro with Windows
XP. Recently I had a HD problem completely reinstalled WinXP-SR1, but when
I reinstilled Office Pro 97 everything works fine except Outlook. I have
downloaded the both the SR1 and SR2 patches for this and it makes no
difference.

When I first try to run it, I get several messages that several of the .ECF
files in the addin subdirectory will not install with a reference to 'bad
syntax'. Then it closes. Anyone have any ideas here

Uncheck applications in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Advanced
Options-> button Add-In Manager (the location could be off as I don't have a
Outlook 97 available at the moment)
You can also rename extend.dat to extend.old to clear the configured Add-ins

Thanks for the information, but this does not work for me. The program will
not open, so I cannot access the Tools folder and changing the suffix on
extend.dat to extend. old does not work either. Any other suggestion would
be appreciated.

See if you can find a registry entry for this in;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions

Make sure you export the key first before deleting any entries so you can
easily restore things back.

Can you relate the entries to the error you get? What is the exact error yu
get?
Like I stated before; At this point you can't really do much damage as long
as you export the key first and only delete entries.
