Outlook 2K on XP SP2 spikes CPU to 99

We're using Outlook 2000 on XP SP2 systems and there is a frequent, yet
random, issue with opening emails. I have NT and 2000 as well as XP SP1
systems running Outlook 2000 without this issue occurring, so I'm fairly
certain it's directly related to SP2. When opening an email, even with only a
couple of lines of text, it can take upwards of 10-12 seconds for the message
to open. During this time, the Outlook.exe process in the task manager runs
itself to 99. Since no one but the SP2 users are experiencing this on my
network, I have ruled out any issues with the Exchange 2000 server (running
on Windows 2000 server). I have even tried upgrading Outlook 2000 to Outlook
XP and the same problem persists.

We installed Outlook using the Office 2000 Professional suite, we're on
Office 2000 SR-1 and Service Pack 3. No other performance issues with these
machines.

Any suggestions/ solutions would be greatly appreciated as my own
workstation is one of the affected machines.

Do you have any add-ins installed for Outlook. A virusscanner that
integrates with Outlook can cause this behavior too.

Tips of the month:
-What do the Outlook Icons Mean?
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

We've got McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0, but the On-Delivery E-scanner is
disabled.

Does anyone know of any issues with .PST files and Outlook 2000 and Windows
XP SP2? I'm sitting here with two XP SP2 workstations side by side, all the
same programs on each, looking at the same Exchange mailbox, one with 3- .PST
files, two networked, one local, and one machine without. The machine without
the .PST files never lags when opening email.

Hello WineTech,

i could remember there was such a problem, when you access an
Exchangemailbox with Outlook XP, when you opened it before with Ol2003.

With Oulook XP SP3 we had no problems.

Greets, Helmut Obertanner.

In the end, I wound up deleting the user folder from c:\documents and
settings for each of the affected users. When we logged back in and set up
Outlook, there were no more problems. Very bizarre, but at least we found a
workable solution.

Thanks for all the help.
