Outlook 2010 doesn't sound an alert on new mail

I have Outlook 2010 installed on a Vista Home Premium based laptop.

I have sounds enabled in both control panel to alert to new messages and also to
"play a sound" in Outlook itself. However, it doesn't make a peep when new
messages are received.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have the same issue with a Vista laptop & XP Pro desktop

Make sure you have a sound associated with new mail notification in
the sounds area
