Outlook 2010 Beta setup question

When going thru the setup process, the software automatically set me up as an
IMAP account, not POP3. During that process the setup messages said that it
also couldn’t set it up in an encrypted mode, so it did it unencrypted. I
think I know the difference between IMAP and POP3, but I don’t know if I
should be “encrypted†or not.
In any case, there are two sets of headings for Inbox, Sent items, etc. On
is under the heading “Outlook Data Fileâ€, and the other set is under
(e-mail address removed). Also, the “Sent†folder under the latter is a
sub-folder under “Inbox†whereas the one under “Outlook Data File†is named
“Sent Items†(as opposed to just “Sentâ€) and is in a separate folder.
Anyone know what the explanation is or where I should go to get it? Thanks!
 
An IMAP account is a 2-way syncing account with your server. So the folders
you see in Outlook are also the folder you see on the server. Change one,
and the other will change as well (or you need to re-subscribe to that
folder). Any changes you make in Outlook are also mirrored back to the
server.

A POP3 account is download only and can only download from your main Inbox
folder on the server. Any local changes are not changed back to the server.

Whether or not you need encryption in order to connect depends on the mail
server you are connecting to. Apparently your server does not support
encryption.

If you want to change your IMAP connection to a POP3 connection, remove the
IMAP account from your Outlook configuration and set up the POP3 account
manually via de account settings provided by your ISP.

can do it manually?
 
Could you please tell me where the manual account setup checkbox is? I don't
see it when I go to Account Settings and slect NEW.

Diane - Disregard my email asking where the manual setup box is. I found it.

OK. I was successful in creating a POP3. While doing so, 2 other accounts
were created named "my-email-laddress.com" and "my-email-address (1).com".

I tried to delete them and their respective pst files. I deleted the pst
files for them, but on my Outlook folder listing, "my-email-address (1).com
is still showing and clicking it of course says their is no pst file for it.
How do I delete it please?

I still have an Outlook.pst file.
 
I deleted the data files under File > Account Settings > Data files. In my
Outlook window I still have a folder category for "Outlook Data File" and one
for "my-email-address".com. Each category has sub-folders for Inbox, Drafts,
Sent Items, etc.

I'm set up as a POP3, but all incoming and outgoing mail is being handled by
the email.com pst data file, not the outlook.pst file.

ALSO...when I open outlook now, TWO Outlook windows open, one is useable,
the other has no files in it. Should (could) I send you a screen shot?

I probably don't need a screenshot. My recommendation is to make a new
profile - when you have ghost pst's its hard to remove them without making
more problems.

I created a new profile, which took care of the double opening. Under my
folder tree I have 2 headings, “Favorites†and “ my-email-address.comâ€. They
look like this:

Favorites
Inbox
Sent Items
Deleted Items

My-email-address.com
Inbox
Drafts
Sent Items
Deleted Items
Junk E-Mail
News Feed
Outbox
RSS Feeds
Search Folders

Incoming and sent mail appear under BOTH headings. Is that correct? - Phil

Correct. If you wish, you can remove the Favorites entries. Frankly, I
rarely use the Mail view of the Navigation Pane, but employ the Folder List
view instead so I can see all my folders at once (Calendar, COntacts, and the
other non-mail folders as well). With the Mail view (what you have selected),
you can see only the mail folders and there's no hierarchy. All mail folders
are shown on the same level.
