outlook 2007 vista ultimate email problems

I am at my wits end and ready to buy a mac. When i hit send and receive to
download my email, outlook freezes and i cannot do anything in it until all
the messages are downloaded. Why is this happening? it never happened with
2003. is there a fix? This is greatly affecting my productivity as i get
roughly 200-300 emails everytime i send and receive.

What type of account, eg Exchange or?
Presumably you only open Outlook occassionally and manually send/receive, as
apposed to leaving Outlook running in the background and polling for new
mail every 10 minutes?
These 200/300 emails are all legitimate mail?

pop 3 type of account. i had to turn off the auto S/R and do it manually,
otherwise i have no control whatsoever in outlook--when ever even a single
emal loads, outlook simply stops working until the email is loaded. about
50% are legit. the rest are spam. i had a spam blocker which made it work
even slower so now my internet provider catches most of it. i also have
email virus checked by Trend Micro Virus---do you think that program might be
the problem? thanks for your help.

Try disabling the anti virus addin, allthough you may have to completely
uninstall Trend, reboot, then reinstall without the Outlook intergration..

You could also try running outlook with the safe swich, via the command
"Run"
ie

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Outlook.exe " /safe

Sounds to me like you probably have too many add-ins running in Outlook.
Outlook by itself should be doing background send/receives. Add-in
your antispam AND antivirus software and now the machine is consumed
with trying to check all those messages.

I'd try disabling the antispam software first and let Outlook 2007's
junk e-mail features have a go at it. If nothing else it should process
somewhat faster.

thanks, Ben and DL for the insight. i am not running a spam blocker--i let
my internet provider block it before release from their server. i think you
are both right, it must be the anti-virus software it will run a test by
disabling it momentariy and see if it will help. thanks again.

Disabling it momentarily may not be a valid trial. Even disabled, the AV
program can have hooks into Outlook that can lead to delay.

Right. i know this because I disabled it since yesterday and still have the
same problem. what do i do now?

To correctly determine if the AV program is interfering, you should
uninstall it completely, reboot, then reinstall without the mail scanning
feature. If the problem clears up, then it's likely the AV program was the
cause. If not, then we'll need to look for something else.

What anti virus are you using?
Sometimes it is neccessary to uninstall the anti virus application, and in
the case of Norton & maybe McAfee, to use the completely remove tool on
their sites. Then clean up temp files & reboot prior to reinstalling the AV
without any Outlook or Office intergration
