Sadly, as of Jan 2010, this issue persists with Outlook 2007.

In my opinion, the issue is most noticeable when (1) opening an email
received from (e-mail address removed) or (2) opening an email that contains
resources located on the internet (graphics).

I tried disabling all non-Microsoft add-ins from the Trust Center, as one
post suggested
(http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/tabspace/thread/a7fac3ef-6e09-43ca-bc2b-00b37d639c6a/)
but doing so did not provide a remedy to the issue on my WinXP Pro system.

Regardless, here are the steps I took:

Outlook > Tools > Trust Center > Add-ins > under Manage (bottom),
choose COM Add-ins > Clicked GO.

I then highlighted PDFMOutlook and clicked Remove button.

I repeated this action for all Add-ins shown, with the exception of the
iTunes Outlook addin (needed for iPhone outlook sync), Microsoft Exchange
Unified Messaging,
Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server Colleague Import, Microsoft Outlook
Mobile Service,
Microsoft VBA for outlook, and Outlook change notifier.

Next, under Manage, I chose Exchange Client Extensions > Clicked GO.

I then unchecked "McAfee Anti-Spam" and clicked OK (personal preference; I
don't need
McAfee to assist me with spam recognition).

In Outlook > File > Data File Management, I have two PST files. One is the
main PST (60MB) while the other is where the archive feature relocated items
as necessary (300MB). Both PST files are on my local system and neither are
excessively large, as previously mentioned.

Anyone else having this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Does it work correctly when starting Outlook in Safe Mode?
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe
(note the space in the command)

Is there anything logged to the Event Viewer about these crashes or are
these hangs for which you kill Outlook manually?
