I've been banging my head against the wall on this one, too: running
Vista Business, Office 2007 Ultimate. It works on one machine, doesn't
on another.
One thing to try: searching for Outlook items works well from the
desktop instant search (or the Tools>Instant Search>Search Desktop menu
item in Outlook). Searching from the "Search All Outlook Items" bar at
the top of the email list doesn't work. This suggests a problem within
Outlook, versus the indexing service or its index.
Does the desktop instant search work for you, i.e. does it find Outlook
items?
I am using Vista Ultimate RTM and Office Pro 2007 RTM. I also relocated
the
index file like Christy did, but the instant search stays unwilling in
finding mail and contact items. I also have rebuilded the index which
took 4
hours.

Vista Enterprise - final (we have SA) and Office 2007 Professional
Plus.
I relocated the index file through the control panel applet and it
works now.
When I examined the folders with the indexing files in them yesterday
I
noticed something weird. A file called schema.txt, in the
search|data|config
folder had lines for contacts - column name=System.Contact. etc- and
so
forth, and many entries for for document, media, photo....no entries
for
anything that appeared to be email messages. This morning, this file,
in the
new location, newly generated I suppose, has several system.message
lines.
