Outlook 2007 Data File Location

I have an Outlook Data File (not the initial .PST) where I organize all the
message I want to keep. Since I work both at my business and at home (yes ,
I know :-), I have placed this data file on a U3 Flash Drive that I can
easily carry around with me.

All seems to work well, except that each time Outlook is launched, it
complains about the data file not having been closed propoerly the previous
time it was used. I never had this problem when the data file was on a USB
hard drive.

Anybody knows what is going on?

You access this directly from the USB drive or copy it to the hard drive?
Right-click on the root of that data file and choose "Close .." Before you
shut down Outlook or disconnect the USB drive (assuming it is on it) and see
if helps.
If you access the file from the USB drive then ensure you also disconnect
the USB drive before unplugging it.

The "live" file is opened on the USB Flash Drive.

I have tried closing the file in Outlook. Same results as just closing
Outlook: message when opening again.

And you're sure OUTLOOK.EXE is gone from the process list in Task Manager
when you mismount the flash drive?

That's "dismount", of course.
 
Hi Brian,

1) The Outlook Data File is open and I can access messages in there labeit
with excessively slow performance (about 10 times slower than with
WinXP/Outlook 2003).

2) I CLOSE the file from inside Outlook.

3) I attempt to eject the USB Flash Drive: Vista says NO, a file is in use.

4) I close Outlook 2007 (Task Manager says it is gone).

5) I eject the USB Flash Drive.

6) I insert the USB Flash Drive.

7) I launch Outlook 2007 under Vista.

8) I OPEN the Outlook Data File on the USB Flash Drive:
Outlook complains that it was closed improperly the last time used
and goes of to a lengthy check process.

This is repeatable time after time.
This does not happen under WinXP/Outlook 2003.
This does not happen with other data files.

NOTE: delayed writes for the USB Flash Drive are disabled (Optimized for
Quick Removal under Vista).

Try waiting a littly longer, say a minute or two, at this point before
continuing.
5) I eject the USB Flash Drive.

6) I insert the USB Flash Drive.

7) I launch Outlook 2007 under Vista.

Does waiting a while after cloing Outlook make any difference?
This is repeatable time after time.

Experiment with these settings a little to see if it makes a difference.
