Outlook 2007 compatibility with email server

I have been told by my IT people that Outlook 2007 will not work with the
email server that is used by our organization. Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003
work. What is the best way to handle this problem since I am using Vista and
Office 2007?
 
Did they happen to explain WHY Outlook 2007 won't work? What type of email
server is it and what protocols does it support? There are *VERY* few email
servers that won't work with 2007.
