Outlook 2007 - compacting pst file does not seem to work

Using Outlook 2007, SP2, in XP.

have been cleaning up my file, and deleting old unneedd messages etc.

Then tried to Compact the psdt file. The operation would seem to work OK -
but only takes approx 1 secpond, and there does not seem to be amy compacting
done on the file, which is now 250mb.

Anything to look for here to resolve this please??
