We are in the process of installing Exchange 2003 and would like to upgrade
our Outlook to 2003. We are currently running Office XP. Can we install
Outlook 2003 and remain with Office XP?

Your dealing with Microsoft, they do not supporting diverging
products. All or nothing.

You certainly can run Outlook 2003 on the same machine as Office XP versions of the other programs. However, because of the differences between those versions, you will not have access to certain integration features, such as Word as the email editor and the File | Send commands.

Sue,

I just logged on to the forum and saw your response below regarding use of
WORD as my Email editor in Outlook. My Office 2003 WORD has been faithfully
serving as my Email editor ever since I purchased this system. However, in
the last two weeks, my Outlook has been giving me the error message that
although WORD is set as the Email editor, it is Unavailable, not installed or
not the same version as Outlook. Then it defaults to the inferior Outlook
Email Editor.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this? Thank you for your
assistance.

Thanks, Brian.

I finally took the plunge and paid the obiligatory fee to Microsoft for a
one-time technical assist to troubleshoot this problem. The tech worked
remotely through my computer and immediately discovered that one of the
options for making Word my Email Editor was not clicked. (I am not sure how
that happened, as both "on" is the normal position for my computer.)
Afterwards, he couldn't get my Email signatures to function (except in plain
text), and he worked for nearly an hour before finding that the culprit was
apparently a SMS file that was in residence in my COM ADD-IN location
(Tools-->Options-->Other-->Advanced Options-->Com Add-in). He had a devil of
a time deleting the file. He eventually shut everything down and restarted
Outlook in the Safe mode. In this mode, he was able to finally extricate the
file and dispose of it. Afterwards, the signature features worked fine. He
indicated that he had never seen anything quite like my problem and thought
enough of the experience to refund my money.

BTW, the link you sent me would have solved the problem also during
reinstall of Office, when the add-in would have been overwritten.

I hope this helps some other user.

Uncle Ben
