Oulook 2003 appears to launch and then suddenly
disappears. There is no error message. If I "repair"
the installation, Outllok will launch successfully one or
two times and then the problem repeats. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. I
have no problems with Word and Excel. Is there a known
conflict with Norton Antivirus or software firewalls?
Thanks

Have you looked in the Event Viewer to see if there are any errors listed
there? Also what happens if you create a new profile for Outlook?

Thank you for your reply.
The Event Viewer says that "the MOF file created for the
Outlook service could not be loaded. etc, etc."
Unfortunately, I don't have a clue what that means.

MOF file? That sounds like Outlook was deployed via SMS or something
like that. Did you install from the CD or ?

Outlook 2003 (and eveything else) was installed from an
Office Professional Edition 2003 CD. I have not
installed OneNote.

Is this on a standalone machine or part of a corporate network or ?

The PC is a standalone running XP Pro. This problem is
apparently unique to Outlook 2003 because I had no
problem with the previous version of Outlook with the
same configuration. I did, howevever, wipe the drive
clean when I installed Office 2003. I might have
answered a question incorrectly during the install.
Perhaps it is time to uninstall/install Office? Or do
you believe the problem is with Windows?
Thanks

Well...this is an odd problem. MOF files are generally associated with
programs like SMS or Windows Update that do patch and version management.
I would try uninstalling/reinstalling and see if that works. Did you
use Office Update or Windows Update recently to make changes to the machine
(Outlook in particular?)

Thank you for your continuing attention to my problem.
I did update Office recently but that was after the
problems started. I continuously update Windows when I
receive the notifications from Microsoft, but as Woody's
Windows Watch cautions, the cure is sometimes worse than
the disease. I will try to completely uninstall Office
and then reinstall to see if that corrects the problem.
If that doesn't work, I will cheerfully nuke the drive
and start from scratch again. At least I have the latest
security update CD, which should minimize the time I'm
downloading Windows updates.
Thanks once again.

My pleasure, sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. That's the first
I've ever heard of that particular problem.
