Outlook 2003 very slow

I have XP Pro SP2 with OL 2003. I recently ran Spybot and Spyblaster which
loaded my restricted zone with URLs. (I probably didn't need to do that
since I have a commercial version of AVG 8.0) Subsequently, it took 40 to 50
seconds to open or send an email. I removed all URLs from both Restricted
and Trusted zones and rebooted. Emails now open or send in 30 seconds.

The same day I also removed IM from Startup.

Does anyone have any other ideas about what I can do to get my email speed
back into an acceptable range?

Without knowing your mail type, no idea, I would assume its not a pop mail
account since Restricted/Trusted zones have nothing to do with pop mail.

The words 'exceptable range' mean nothing without some context.

It is all pop3 mail. Previous open an send actions all happened within 2 or
3 seconds. 30 seconds is unreasonably slow.

In that case your Restricted/Trusted zones have no baring on Outlook
Any AV that is integrated with OL can cause problems and it is not
necessary, assuming such an AV has real time scanning.

An AV & spyware/malaware apps do two different things, so having an AV
doesn't mean you should'nt use the other as well

Well, DL, I am finding your responses pretty well off topic and would like
someone else to respond to the original question. Thanks.

Hi,
First, DL not OFF topic infact he is on the ball and you need to bear with
him and give the info needed!
Since when that happned....meaning after installing a software or updates?
Does the Spybot and Spyblaster running in real time mode protection or tea
timer in the case of Spybot S&D?
Do you have a firewall installed?
Did you run a clean up and Compact your messages latley?
How many application are running in the background?
Use this tool to see in real time what running in the background:

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies

'off topic' was a bad choice of words. I have previously done all of the
cleaning steps and do run the full AVG 8.0 commercial firewall, spyware,
email scanners, etc. and have disabled, rebooted and tested each and all of
them in ré the OL issue. Since AVG updates daily, I have also directed
diagnostics toward them.

I pulled spybot and spyblaster and tried to correct any issues they may have
created. I did clean and compact OL messages. There are 166 background apps
running.

I will address that issue and reduce the number of apps m when I get back
from a business trip next week and appreciate both your and DL's assistance.

Hi,
166 apps running in the background too much. Do you know all of them?
I will be happy to assist you in this if you wish you can email me at this
address: (to_you_rossatyahoo.co.uk) replace the abvious to mail me.
AVG may not be your Issue only in the email scanner, try to disable it from
the app configuration Tab and see if that will speed sending and recieving.
HTH.

As previously stated intergrating an AV app with OL is not required, if that
AV has real time scanning, which AVG does.
Intergrated an AV with OL, causes many problems with OL - see OL groups for
more
Disabling intergration very often doesnt work, and it is neccessary to
uninstall the AV, prior to reinstalling without the OL intergration.
Another issue can be any other plugins / comm addins installed with OL - you
can try starting OL using the Safe switch to test.
Also if the auto send/receive is set for less than 5 minutes - 10 better -
resource problems can occur.
Have you also tried running, with OL closed, scanpst.exe, the inbox repair
tool?

If by background apps you mean 'running processes' as seen in Task Manager
then 166 is rather a lot, I have 104 currently running, winxp, and no OL or
other problems, but then this may also depend on cpu & memory.

Thanks to you & nass for taking the time and having the patience to respond.

I will be offline until next week, when I will likely return with more
questions. I will keep them in this thread.
