outlook 2003 uses 100% CPU

I have all the latest updates for both Outlook 2003, and XP Pro. I have
checked for virus, spyware, and ever rootkits....nothing. This same thing
happened about a year ago, and somehow just went away, probably due to an
auto update from MS, but now it is back.

Anyone have a resolution, TIA,

Rich

At what time does it peak to 100%? What action did you select?
What type of e-mail account are you using?
Any add-ins installed?
Does it work when you start Outlook in safe mode?

It peaks as soon as I receive an email. I uninstalled all add-ins.....no
difference.
I am using POP3 and exchange.
I have never tried it in safe mode, I will give that a shot....makes sense.

Thank you for your response,

Could it be your virusscanner that integrates with Outlook and does an
incoming mail scan? Disable this integration and try again.

I thought that also, so I uninstalled McAfee, and no difference.

Thanks,

Well, if anyone is interested, it appears that I fixed it. I ran SCANPST,
and it found some errors and repaired them. And so far, Outlook is no longer
hogging the CPU. Curious thing is, I thought Outlooks "Dectect and Repair"
was the same software, so even though I knew about SCANPST, I didn't run it,
till now.

Anyway cheers,

Rich

Good to hear. No they aren't the same thing;
Detect and repair checks/repairs the installation (files) of Office.
Scanpst.exe checks the integrity and consistency of the Outlook datafile
(pst-file)

Yes, in deed, I found that out the hard way......I had no idea, otherwise I
would have run it long ago, for I was aware of it, just didn't know there was
difference.

Thanks for the help,

I've had the same problem for several days, and have been looking for a
solution. I tried what you did, and (so far) it's worked for me as well. It
was just a pain to *find* scanpst.exe! I've now made a shortcut for it....

Well, as you read my above post, I knew about it, but I thought the Detect
and repair was the same thing, so I didn't use it, but finally decided to
give it a shot, and VOILA. BTW, I believe it might have been Diskkeeper that
might have damaged the PST file. There is no way that I found to tell
Diskkeeper to not run automatically, so I now have disabled it with MSCONFIG,
so hopefully it won't happen again, if in fact it did cause the damage. And
the reason I say that is, Outlook aborted one time when Diskkeeper was
running, but at the time I never thought much about it, until now.

Cheers,

Rich
