Outlook 2003 SP2 - unable to send / receive messages

Since upgrading one of my PCs to SP2 I have been unable to send or receive
any messages.

Do I need to change any settings to allow SP2 to operate on this PC?

On my other PC, which hasn't yet had SP2 applied, I am still able to send &
receive messages OK. The configurations on both PCs look the same. I do not
want to upgrade the second PC at this time in case the same problem occurs.

If I want to, can I uninstall SP2 or do I have to install the whole program
and reinstall from scratch? If I do the latter, will I lose my history of
in/out messages?

I can also see incoming messages addressed to me via my BT Yahoo web mail
service.

What happens when you try?
SP2 should be left in place. Try removing the email accounts then add them
back. A new profile might help. More information on exactly what the issue
is via error messages or diagnostic logging is needed.

Thanks for your reply BillR.

Error messages as follows:-
Task 'my account name - receiving' reported error (0x8004210A); the
operation timed out waiting a response from the receiving (POP) server.
Similar message (ref no. 0x8004210B) received in respect of sending (SMTP)
server.

I removed the account and set it up again - no difference.

I set up a new profile and set up an account in that - no difference
(incidently I could not see existing messages in the new profile - am i right
in thinking that I could resolve this if the new profile was able to send &
receive new massages?)

Config details -
Mail account type = POP/SMTP
POP3 & SMTP servers both named mail.btinternet.com
Under 'more settings' outgoing server authentication box ticked - use same
settings as my incoming server. Port numbers - In (POP3) 110, Out (SMTP) 25

I have checked that these settings are the same as on my other PC (both
Windows XP / SP2) - I am able to send & receive OK on the other one (which
has not been upgraded to Outlook 2003 SP2). On the PC that I am having
problems with, I can see incoming emails via my web based BtYahoo account.

I would appreciate any further suggestions that you can make.

You could try increasing the server timeout. is there any firewall,
antivirus etc that might be blocking access?

Hello BillR,

You have cracked it (or at least identified the problem).

By a process of elimination, I have identified Norton Personal Firewall as
being the offending product. Norton Anti Virus allowed traffic through but
not the firewall.

Do you know how I can configure the firewall to allow the emails through (I
don't want to discontinue using this software)? Any ideas or process that I
can follow to identify what needs to be configured would be greatly
appreciated.

Many thanks for your assistance.

The documentation that comes with your firewall will tell you, as will the
firewall's Help.

Many thanks, Brian.

I have not found the Symantec support documentation on this subject very
helpful in the past - but will percevere to get the settings right.

In the meantime I have temporarily disabled Norton personal firewall and
turned on the Windows XP Internet connection firewall instead.

Thanks for your feedback.

You may have to define Outlook as an exception in the Windows firewall as
well.

Problem finally resolved.

I was unable to find any specific help in configuring Personal Firewall so I
uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Internet Security (which contains Personal
Firewall). This set the rules back to the defaults.

When I next loaded Outlook, Personal Firewall detected the program
attempting to access the internet and automatically configured it to permit
required access.

I have now turned off Windows firewall and am back to using Norton.

Thanks for your help.
