1 - Can I assume if the rules update button is greyed out that there are now
updates available?

2 - Junk Mail filter works well in 2003 with exception of the psuedo
Microsoft mail (30-40 a day) alerting me to replace file. Anybody with a
solution?

the update button is to update rules created in older versions. if you don't
have any created in an older version, the button isn't live.

a 3rd party program like mailwasher works the best for those... many of mine
came from the same domains - aol.net, microsoft.net, bigfoot.net,
america.net, america.com - so rules deleting mail with those words in the
header worked on many of the messages.
