I've been using Outlook 2003 and have installed the
Technical Refresh released a few months ago. Is there a
simple way to import my PST from this version back into
Outlook 2002? Thanks in advance.

Phil.

You can open the file in Outlook 2002 when you haven't used an Outlook 2003
datafile.

If you have used an Outlook 2003 datafile;
In Outlook 2003 create a new 97-2002 Outlook Data File. Export or copy your
mesages to this pst-file. In Outlook 2002 use File-> Open-> Outlook Data
File to connect to the file.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Roady, I'll try that this evening and let you know
how I make out. I'm a little confused though about you
mentioning not having used an Outlook 2003 datafile? The
sequence of events that brought this around was as
follows:

Install Office 2003 over top of 2002.
Import my backed up PST file from 2002 into 2003.
Installed Technical Refresh Update.
Backed up 2003 PST file.
System reformatted and installed 2003 clean.
Re-installed Technical Refresh Update.
Import backed up PST file.
If I copy the backed up PST file to my other laptop and
try importing it using 2002 there is an error message
saying this version is not compatible?

Phil.

That is correct. The format of the pst-file changed in Outlook 2003 (even
between BETA versions) and is not compatible with earlier versions of
Outlook. That is why I mentioned the Outlook 2003 datafile. Older pst-files
are still compatible with Outlook 2003 that's why you can open "old" Outlook
97-2002 Outlook Data Files in Outlook 2003 and than later open it in Outlook
97-2002 again (if you haven't used the import but just File-> Open-> Outlook
Data File...)

The new Outlook Data File is in unicode and for the end-user the main
advantage is that there is no 2GB limit on the file but 20GB.

Thanks again, so at the risk of sounding silly, are you
saying I can or cannot do an export of my current 2003
PST file and then later on using Outlook 2002 use the
File->Open command and gain access to this newer version
PST? I think I'm going to be forced to use Outlook 2003
now...

Phil.

No problem.

You CAN export but you need to make sure you export to an Outlook 97-2002
Data File. When you create a new pst-file by using File-> New-> Outlook Data
File you can choose whether you create an Outlook 97-2002 or Outlook 2003
data file. Of course; choose an Outlook 97-2002 Data File.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your assistance
greatly. I am keeping my fingers crossed that MS will
have decent pricing here in Canada on the stand alone
pricing for Outlook 2003 as it is IMO a vastly superior
version to 2002.

Phil.

Note that 20Gb is not a hard maximum for the Outlook 2003 PST. The maximum
can be tweaked by regkey up to some 43 Terabytes.

The Outlook 97-2002 PST still has a 2Gb limit though

Yes, I know that. I actually thought of posting that at the time but I
thought it was a little "off-topic" (just a little) of posting that info
while the issue was about compatibility.

Thanks! :-)

The maximum size is even bigger by the way;
4,294,967,295 MB = 4096TB
