Outlook 2003...prevent deleting contacts?

We use Outlook 2003 at work for a client list of about 1500. Today, we
noticed a couple of clients that had been entered had been deleted.
Luckily, they were found in the "deleted items" folder, but I wonder, is
there a way to either prevent or "Prompt" when a Contact is about to be
deleted?

I played around a bit in the program, and found that if a Contact is
selected, hitting the Delete key or Ctrl-D will indeed delete the Contact
without a prompt asking "Are you sure you want to delete..."

Is there a way to have that prompt come up in the future if someone
accidentally deletes a contact? I'm sure it wasn't done on purpose...we
have some people using the computer that aren't very educated. I'd just like
to prevent this from happening if possible. Luckily, the program isn't
dumping the Deleted Items folder on closing the program.

Does deleting anything else bring up the "are you sure...." message?
Are you using Exchange?
Is this data in a public folder?

It's a stand-a-lone computer, not on a network. Emptying the Deleted Items
folder brings a prompt. I have it set to NOT delete that folder when the
program closes, so at least it's a cushion against contacts disappearing
completely. It would just be nice to get a prompt before deleting the
Contact when in the Contact folder. Too many people are using the computer
who really don't know what they are doing.

I don't get the prompt either, fwiw. I don't know why, and frankly, I'd
never noticed that before! I don't know of any way to force it, sorry.

Ultimately, that's something that should be addressed via training - or
limit access to the users who can be trusted in these matters.

Thanks for trying to help. Yes, training is needed for the other employees.
It's not seen as crucial, but I suspect that will change if someone messes
the list up and results in a mistake with a client. (it's a hair salon)

Yeah, that would probably irritate someone :)
You might want to look into an online service, maybe? Hosted Exchange, or
online CRM tools...salesforce.com is one that might be useful. Also means
you don't have to worry about your backups.
