I just installed Outlook 2003 and I seem to have two Personal Folders
in my folders list. But, they both point to the same place and have
the same data when I click on them. How do I remove the duplicate?

Jeff

R click the one that is not your default, then select Close from the context
menu.

Stubborn cases require editing the registry.

Try going into your registry at this point:
(Win 9x/ME) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
(Win NT/2000/XP) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>

Look in the tree under that point (it should be full of keys with long
hexadecimal value names) and look for a section that references the PST file
you want off of your folder tree. Export that section (for safety) and then
delete it.

I had the same problem with duplicated personal foders. I carefully followed
Russ' instructions and was able to delete the "stubborn" duplicate personal
folder from my Outlook 2003.

Yes, I found many keys with long hex value name under the Outlook key. So I
clicked each one of them and found out that only 2 of them had a "Personal
Folders" value under the Data column. So, I exported the second key that had
this value for safety as Russ suggested and then deleted it from the
registry. The duplicate personal folder was no longer there when I opened
the Outlook.

Within the Outlook folder, there are a bunch of folders with long
hexadecimal values for names -- those are the ones you need to look in to
see if you can find the ghost .PST names. If you delete one of the keys and
it points to your real .PST file instead of one of the ghosts, it's not the
end of the world -- your data won't be gone. The worst you would have to do
is recreate your Outlook profile.

I had tried that but close was not available. I don't remember what I
finally did to fix this, but I now only have one Personal Folders listed
and everything is working the way it should.

This was not an easy upgrade for me.
