Hi all

I am running Outlook 2003 against an Exchange 2003 server using cached mode.
Whilst it works OK I can find no way of moving the new type of OST file that
is created when the profile is initially setup. I must admit that
considering a standard legacy OST file could be placed anywhere this is a
major problem for users who have already got their legacy OST file in a
location other than their C: drive.

My real question is how to relocate the cache file. Simply moving the file
to another location just causes a new one to be recreated in the default
location with no prompts whatsoever. I have tried modifying the location at
setup and no matter what I do it just ends up in the default location. I
have also searched the registry for any pointers again to no avail. The only
way I can see is to relocate the users profile directories to the required
location thus moving the default location of the cache file. However, this
is far less than ideal and seems rather a convoluted compared to what was a
very simple issue to resolve in previous versions.

Any ideas gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Paul Lemonidis.

You should be able to relocate the OST file through the mail applet in the
control panel.

Example:

* Shutdown all e-mail enabled applications
* Start the mail applet in the control panel
* Email Accounts
* View/Change existing account (2nd radio button)
* Highlight exchange account
* Change
* Advanced button
* Advanced tab
* Offline settings button at the bottom

Hi Neo

Thanks for your prompt reply. I tried that and it only seems to work if you
have a legacy OST file running. All the relevant buttons are greyed out
unless you have a legacy OST file running? It had no effect other than on
legacy OST file location? I have tested this several times.

Many thanks in advance.

Try disabling cached mode. Set where you want the ost to be (start Outlook
at least once) and then re-enabled cached mode.

Hi Neo

Many thanks for your advice.

I tried this and it results in two OST files. One is a legacy one in the
specified location which is created when I specify a location. This appears
to be done in the background and I have no control over its creation. Once I
then re-enable the caching it recreates a new file in the default C: drive
location and re-copies down the mailbox to it. If I then disable offline
folders, as opposed to caching, I am back to having a new format OST for the
offline file in the default location.

I think that from the above it must be by now clear that there appears no
way to actually move the offline cache file. I have tried with two different
copies of Outlook on completely different machines and the results are
identical. Thus I am at a total loss as to how to relocate the cache file.

I would appreciate any more information you can give me even if it is just
to confirm my suspicion that there is no way to move the cache other than
move the users default profile location.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Paul Lemonidis.

Weird, because I'm following those steps here and have my ost on a data
partition. The only thing left behind on the o/s partition is the *.oab
files.
