Outlook 2003 not properley shutting down pst files?

I just installed Outlook 2003 (I had been using Outlook XP). I have
successfully specified my old pst file as the default (and only) data file.
Everything works fine.

Upon reboot, OL 2003 complains that the pst file is in use (it's not...al
least by me) and refuses to start up. After repairing a COPY of the pst file
(I can't access the original) using scanpst.exe (Inbox repair tool), I
proceed into mail setup, specify the (repaired) pst file as the new default
data source, remove references to the damaged(?) pst file and restart OL
2003. Everything works fine. When I reboot, the problem starts all over
again.

It's not clear that I even need to run scanpst.exe but I was hoping that
might solve the problem.

Any thoughts?

thanks
ricky

Do you have an Outlook shortcut in your startup folder? If yes, try taking
it out for the time being and see if your problem disappears.

Are you using anything like Active Sync that would be accessing the PST and
starts before Outlook?

Are you using RTM or one of the beta builds?

I do have activesync installed.

I'm using the public release.

cradle after opening outlook and remove it before closing to see if that
solves the problem.

What does 'cradle' mean?

I have unistalled Activesync to no avail. I have also done a little research
to see if anything else accesses the file at startup...nothing jumps out.

Hook up the ipaq to the computer for syncing - you can leave Active sync
installed, just don't connect the ipaq until Outlook is started and remove
it before closing outlook.

I located the problem. The process sqlagent.exe was accessing the file.
After stopping the SQLServer Agent, Outlook started normally. Any idea why
SQL Server would even be interested in this file? Any idea how to get it to
be uninterested in the file? ;-)

thanks
