To expand more on this, user properties *are* named properties, but Outlook
can see them in the UserProperties collection because their definitions are
stored in yet another named property.

In the context of your question, "named properties" are properties that are
largely (but not always) invisible to the user and accessible only through
low-level APIs such as Extended MAPI, CDO 1.21, and Redemption.
