outlook 2003 mail box size problem

Hello,

I noticed that I lost some emails with outlook 2003 because the mail box
is full. Does it mean outlook.pst is too big? what is the maximum mail
box size and any way to change it?

I clicked "File" => "Achive ..." and have the mailbox archived.
but outlook.pst still has the size 1.2 GB and more. I have many emails
every day, anyway to make it smaller and reduce the chance of getting
full mailbox?

For Outlook 2003, the PST can become quite large so your mailbox can't be
full. There is no maximum mailbox size. There is a maximum PST size for
Outlook 2002 and older but for 2003 I believe the PST can be as large as 18
GB.
Are you sure you have "lost" emails or have you archived them?

When I click send/recieve, all emails downloaded are gone.

I have to run achive first and then I am able to download emails in the
incoming mail folder.
but I don't see much reduced file size in outlook.pst after archived the
emails. Not sure what is going on here?

It sounds like you're using an Outlook 97-2002-format PST. Find out by
right-clicking the root of the PST, choosing Properties, then clicking
Advanced. Examine the Format field. If it contains "97-2002" in the
description, then you are not using the new Unicode-format PST, which can
get VERY large. There are ways to migrate to a new format PST if you want
to do that. Post back if so.

As to the PST size reduction, you won't see one, usually, even though you've
archived things. Outlook retains the freed-up space (called "white space")
in the PST so that it can be reused if more items arrive. It's much faster
than releasing the space to the file system and then asking for it again
soon after. If you want to force a size reduction you can, but there's
usually no reason to do so.

No. I mean, in Outlook, right-click on the words "Personal Folders" or
"Outlook Today" or whatever you see displayed in the Folder List as the root
of the PST.

It's not required, but it's very much to your advantange. In fact, it's to
your advantage even if you never upgrade to Office 2007.

It looks that microsoft standard alone retailer version of outlook 2003
has this problem. If I use the small business computer bundled outlook
2003, it doesn't have this issue.

Not sure if I unnistalled the current version of outlook 2003 and
install small business outlook 2003, will it fix it?

If you switch to the Unicode format PST, you'll be using Outlook 2003's
native PST format. I'm not sure what upgrade you mean.

Outlook 2007 can handle the ANSI format PST as well, so there's not mandate
to migrate your PST to the Unicode format. However, you'll always be stuck
with the 2GB limit you have now.

There are a couple of choices. You can update the PST format like this:

or with this: http://www.maclean.com/upstart/ is you have Outlook 2003
installed.

if my outlook 2003 will suppport unicode format, it should be OK.
