When I try to open an e-mail wi an attachment, more often
than not Outlook 2003 freezes. When it doesn't the first
time, it will the third or fourth time. Once it begins
to freeze it becomes progressively unstable until at some
point it won't even start until I reboot. Even then, at
some point it becomes necessary to run a repair on it.
I've tried lowering the security - to no effect. Windows
XP wi all maint applied defines my processor as a Celeron
running at over 800Mz, wi 386MB memory

I am running into freezes all the time with OL 2003. I am wondering if importing my old OL 2000 pst is causing this problem...or would it even cause this problem?

I don't have any problem with data brought forward from
my OL 2002 pst. But after a few of the freeze incidents,
OL 2003 begins to freeze on silly stuff like a double
click on calendar items...

I have contacted MS Support...and am working through the issue. I am now dealing with the same exact issue you are describing to a T.

This is so frustrating...new software, new operating system, new machine...all up to date and freezes too often to use.

OK, I have had some interaction with MS Tech...they suggested this (as typed by the tech)

Based on the information above, I am afraid we cannot decide what the root cause of the problem is. Therefore, let us follow the steps below to create a new profile, and then test the issue in the new profile.

Note: A new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a new profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the corrupt profile of Outlook. Creating new profile will not do any damage to the old profile.

Create a new profil
===============

1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
2. Click Switch to Classic View, and then click the Mail ico
3. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click the Show Profiles button.
4. On the "General" tab, click to select the "Prompt for a profile to be used" check box.
Note: this step is important for the further steps. Please confirm it

5. Click Add.
6. In the Profile Name box, type a descriptive (I used my last name) name for the new profile, and then click OK.
7. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
8. Configure the email account in the new profile following the Wizard
9. Click OK
10. Open Outlook and select the new profile you just create
Note: all the folders should be empty in the new profile
11. Send a test email with a large attachment, and try to download it.

Please let me know whether or not the problem still occurs in the newly created profile

You can refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) for more information

If the problem stops in the new profile, please refer to the following KB article to transfer the data originally created in Outlook 2000 to the new profile

Now, back to me...I created a new profile, imported my .pst over, created the email accounts and I am off and running. So far so good...no freezes, yet.
