When I enter the address in a new e-mail message Outlook 2003 obligingly
auto-completes the name. However, it sometimes comes up with more than one
instance of the name (with a different e-mail address in each case). There
is only one instance of the name in 'Contacts', where does the other one
come from? Outlook Express's address book? Or another copy of 'Contacts'?
Somewhere else?

Many thanks.

The autocompletion cache. Remove individual addresses from the
autocompletion cache by highlighting the entry when presented in the
suggested names list (use your arrow key to migrate to the entry) and then
hitting your Delete key before you tab out of the field. To clear the entire
cache, follow the instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q287623

I get a "Check Names" dialog from which I cannot delete this name.

Then describe more completely and accurately what you are doing and so that
we can tell whether you are using autocompletion or autoresolution. Include
the data source for your Contacts.

Here's another instance of what I think is the same problem:

1) Use the "Rules Wizard" to try and "flag a message from someone with a
colored flag"
2) When I click the "people or dist. list" link a dialog pops up that says
(paraphasing for bevity)
"...Address book could not be displayed...The contacts folder associated
with the address book could not be displayed.."
3) Then a dialog named "rule address" pops up. This has a "Show names from
the:" drop down box which contains these entries (my comments on what
happens when the entry is selected shown in brackets, below):
"Outlook Address Book" (which is empty - why?)
Contacts (this one pops up the same dialog seen in (2) above)
Contacts (this copy is populated)
Contacts (this copy is populated as well)

Outlook appears to have two address books (inherited from my import from
OE6?), both in the wrong place! I would like just one, and in "Outlook
Address Book". Ideas appreciated.

Thanks.

Correction to last sentence. From
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011132421033.aspx it appears
that I want to use "Contacts". The problem is that Outlook thinks that I
have three sets of "Contacts"!

Thanks.

Your Outlook Address Book Service settings are corrupt. Remove the Service.
Restart Outlook. Re-add the Service and direct it to display the Contacts
Folder you want to use. If you don't know how, read here:

Early days, but that appears to have worked.

Thanks!
