We've set up a new user on Exchange 2000, using Outlook
2003. This user's full name is 19 characters long (first
+ last name). I set up the username to be 8 characters
long, and the display name to be the entire 19
characters.

When we pull up Outlook (after configuring his profile),
the inbox shows there are new messages, but the preview
pane says "unable to display the folder".

I am able to pull up his account in Outlook Web Access
without difficulties...

Are there size limitations on usernames\display names
that may be causing this error? Other ideas?

Ryan

Hello,

I don't think there is a size limitation on usernames/display names to this
problem. Comparing to mine, I have user name that is 6 characters long and
my display name is 19 characters long; I don't have problem openning
Outlook.

Here is my question, what is the exact error when your user tried to access
Inbox?
Can he access any other folder beside Inbox?
When you configured his Outlook profile, can you do a check name?
What is the Operating System running on the client?

Some more info -

The machine is running Windows XP SP1a.

I ran Outlook with the /cleanviews switch - no difference.

When setting up the user profile, I did the "check name"
and it resolves properly (server and username).

I tried this on another new user (with a shorter name) -
it doesn't work either.

I tried setting up a profile with my account - works just
fine.

When Outlook opens, it goes directly to the Inbox - I can
see the list of folders in the folder list, and on the
right hand side, the screen is grey with the text "Unable
to display the folder". When I click on other folders, I
get the same message. One interesting tidbit -
the "Drafts" and "Deleted Items" folder does not display
this error. I am able to write a draft and save it and
delete it without difficulty. Also, I can see that there
are several unread messages in the inbox (it's gives me
the number unread in the folder list). If I use
the "Unread Mail" folder, I can read them...

I do have a few other people running Outlook 2003 without
problems...

This is just bizzare...

Another few notes:

I've tried two different machines (with Outlook 2003) -
same error.

I tried both of the new user accounts on Office XP - they
both work just fine.

Seems to be an issue between the user account, Exchange
and Outlook 2003... ugh.

try a cleanviews from Outlook 2002 - view can get messed up when you use two
different versions on the same mailboxes.

Also, are you using cache mode? If so delete the ost and create a new one -
you can also try it with cache mode off.

Ryan,

Did you ever resolve this problem?
