Hello,
Has anyone else experienced a lot of problems with
Outlook 2003 having problems sending attachments over a
couple of hunder KBs? If I try to send a small
attcahment, say 100KB, it goes without problems. The
error I receive is:

"'Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210B):
The operation timed out waiting for a response from the
sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP)."

I have found something on support.microsoft.com that says
that a post-Sp2 fix should solve my problems, however, my
past experience with trying to get the post sp fixes from
microsft has been frustrating and ended in me not getting
it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel,

Do you get the same behavior if you access the account via Outlook Express
or another POP client?

Also the Hotfixes are pretty easy to get. You just call the main Microsoft
number and tell them that
you are looking for a specific hotfix, you will be connected to a Support
Engineer and they send you the
the bits.

Thanks,

The post SP-fix you are refering to is for a different version of Office.'
Did you do a clean install of Office 2003 or an upgrade?
In case of an upgrade try recreating (do not copy) your mail profile;

I have the same problem on the 2 or 3 POP accounts I have setup in my
profile. No, I have not tried using Outlook Express as my account worked
fine before switching to Office 2003.

I'm not sure that the fixes coming up in SP-3 will help this problem -
they're for a different situation. What mail format are you sending in? If
Rich Text or HTML, try sending as Plain Text (the message will be smaller).
If that still doesn't work, could you try sending one of the large
attachments via Outlook Express and see if that works? I'm trying to
determine whether it's Outlook that's having a problem or if it's your ISP's
email server that just stops responding if the message is too large.

Hi Jeff,
I think I have found the problem and fixed it. The server timeout setting
was set too low. The default setting is 1 minute, so I adjusted mine to 5
minutes and now it is fine. Obviously this may have to be adjusted even
higher depending on the size of the message a person is sending.

For other persons with this problem, here is the steps to get to the
settings in Outlook 2003 and possibly 2002:

1.. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.

2.. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3.. Click the e-mail account you want to change, and then click Change.
4.. Click More Settings, and then click the Advanced tab.
5.. Under Server Timeouts, move the slider toward Long.
6.. Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.

I'm having this same exact issue and seems like all the
Knowledge Base articles deal only when using MS Exchange
Server, not simple, ole POP. Any help on this would be
appreciated.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - the same thing happens with Outlook Express.

I recently installed XP SP2 beta (then uninstalled it) and same with McAfee Internet Security Suite 6.0

I can telnet to the SMTP port of the server just fine, and the 'Test Account Settings' button in the accounts works fine (sends the test message and it shows up in my inbox).

Seems to happen on different ISP accounts too.
