My pst file file has grown very large over the years,
with many emails being saved.
I have been weeding it recently but some files refuse to
be deleted. When I try to delete them Outlook returns the
following message: "The messaging interface has returned
an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart
Outlook".
Restarting does not cure the problem.
I have run scanpst.exe but that does not help.
I run AVG AntiVirus, in case that might be relevent.
I had the same problem with the previous version of
Office (XP), so it is not unique to 2003.
Any ideas?

David how large is the pst. Is it over 2gb. If so, this could be the issue. Personal folders "can" have issue if they go over 2GB or around there. At times you will receive a message that it has reached the limits others times it will just start not function correctly.

Suggestion - if you can still get into the personal folder and maneuever around it. I would create an additional personal folder and try to move some to the new location. This allows it to be more manageable and drop it below the 2GB max.

If this does not work (not able to access at all) may need to run the truncate tool from Microsoft. However, I only recommend this if all else is tried since it is a blind truncate. You will lose data and not know what you have lost.

Finally, I am not sure if your pst is stored on the network or local system. I would also check to make sure you have enough space on the hard-drive or on the network. If you are close to you limits this will cause issues of this sort as well.
