Outlook 2003: Display "Display As" Name instead of email address

I am using Outlook 2003 and use the contacts feature of outlook.

When I receive emails in outlook I would like to see the contact "Display
As" Name as the email sent from (INBOX) instead of the email address
associated to the contact.

Example:
Contact setup: A Contact, (e-mail address removed)
Email from displayed as: (e-mail address removed)
What I would like to have displayed as from: A Contact

Is there a configuration in outlook which will automatically only display
the Display as for incomming emails, instead of the email address in the
email?

Thanks,
gbnsl

You can manually reset the Display As field for each Contact, but on most
occasions, the format of the senders address is determined by the sender,
not the recipient.

Thanks for the prompt (and short) answer.

If it is not possible in outlook, do you think it would be possible to do
the change via a script/ VBA? Or is the sender from field something which I
cannot change?

Gautam.

You'd have to ask in a programming group.
The sender field is part of the email header. I doubt you could change that.
Only the Display As field is an actual part of the Contact Record.

Russ,

Isn't the Display As field autopopulated from the NK2 file if a reply mail
has been sent?

I don't think so. Although it's not been documented, Outlook seems to get
this information from the Contact Record using the same method it uses for
autoresolution (address lookup). Once a name is recognized, it uses the
Contacts Display As field to display the name. It seems to be able to do so
for Contacts who are not in the NK2 file. Do you find something different
when you test it?

Russ,

MS uses the NK2 to populate fields in many different applications. As a
test, open an application like Publisher,.pretend like you're creating a new
page. Then go to file and Send To: . When the Send To opens, it isn't
Outlook, it's still publisher because you can send an active HTML page,
something that wouldn't function well inside of OL. When you start typing
the name of the intended recipient, one that is NOT in a contact folder, but
someone that you've sent an e-mail to, (and thus in the NK2) it will
autocomplete the name from the NK2.

If you begin to type a New contact, and this is someone that is in your
autocomplete, note that OL will autocomplete the Display As field directly
form your autocomplete.

There's no doubt that MS uses the NK2 for more than just autocomplete
e-mails.

I don't doubt that at all. However address look up features in Outlook do
not use the NK2 file. They use the Outlook Address Book engine and the
Contacts database. Since all of this is behind the scenes it is difficult to
know which is being used, since the "Display Names" will appear the same in
each database.
None of this is well enough documented to provide a definitive answer, but
my suspicion from what I've seen is that it is the Outlook address book
engine that is being used to show Display Names in emails when the name is
recognized.
