Under Office XP and below, the user can archive old messages in the
archive.pst created with an earlier version of Outlook.
It appears that this is no longer the case.
I tried to archive old messages to an archive file create with Outlook
97. This worked in Outlook 97, Outlook 2000 and Outlook XP. When I
tried this with Outlook 2003, I got an error message that Outlook 2003
was unable to use the old.pst since it doesn't support unicode.

I wonder if I have to convert the archive.pst to an Outlook 2003 file
format.
Since I use the same.pst file for Outlook XP, it will be a long time
before I convert.

I guess the KB article 830336 explains part of the change but I would
like to keep the ANSI format for folders. So how do I install Outlook
and keep the ANSI format?

thanks

you'll need to create an ansi pst to use with outlook and set it as your
default message store.

Are you using outlook with exchange server? if not, why didn't you use your
old pst? it's ansi and will work like ol2002 for archiving.

No exchange server. Just 2 pop accounts.

I installed Office XP. I then installed Office 2003, rc1. I pointed
that pst file to the one in Office XP.
Today, an event occurred when I open Outlook. It asked me whether I
wanted to archive old items. I said ok.
When the archive run, the pop up said, it can't be done as I don't
have unicode PST file.

I didn't create an ANSI PST file when O2003 was installed. I don't
need 20g store for the pst file.

I don't know if the install of Office 2003 outlook changed the format
on the pst to Unicode

no, it won't convert the pst. Archive shoulda worked since you used the old
pst.

apparently archive always uses a Unicode pst - I thought it used the same
format as your pst. Try renaming your current archive pst and letting
outlook create a new one.

The error message is"

Microsoft Outlook cannot archive items from a Unicode store to a
non-Unicode Outlook 97-2002 Personal folders archive file. Please
select or create a new Personal Folders file that supports Unicode.

I read in the Office 2003 resource kit: Page 238

Because "Microsoft. Office Outlook 2003 is compatible with earlier
versions of Outlook, ..."
I guess the resource kit is off a little bit.
