I am hoping that someone can help me with this problem. I provided a
computer to my father 600 miles away originally loaded with WinXP Pro and
Office XP. About 3 weeks ago he told me that when he tries to compose an
email by launching an untitled message and then clicking on the 'To' or 'cc'
Outlook returns an error message that says: "The address list could not be
displayed. The Contacts Folder associated with this address list could not
be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have
permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook
Address Book, see Microsoft Office Help."
When I set up this computer for him he is an admin on the local machine.
This computer was originally networked in a home workgroup but that is not
working either. He is 81 y.o. and I think that he sometimes forgets exactly
what he did to create a problem. I have tried to delete the data file and
set up a new data file. I have upgraded him to Office 11 but the error
message still comes up. Any help to solve this problem will be greatly
appreciated. I apologize for the cross-post on this but I am at my wits end.

Is the PST file perhaps corrupted or have errors in it? Run ScanPST.exe on
the file (do a file search for it, doubleclick it, and follow the
instructions) to see if that helps. Make sure Outlook is closed first.
You can also try to run Detect and Repair. You can also try to open Outlook
using an appropriate switch:

If your dad is not very computer literate I wouldn't expect him to be able
to recreate the steps he took before a problem arose. Most people half his
age wouldn't remember!

Hopefully someone else will post with good ideas for you too. Let us know
how he makes out.

Have him do this: Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing
directories or address books>Next. Click Outlook Address Book (if it's
listed) and click Remove. Click Finish. Stop and restart Outlook. Now
click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Add a new directory or address
book>Next>Additional Address Books>Next. Select Outlook Address Book, click
Next, then Finish. Now he should be able to right-click the COntacts
folder, choose Properties, and, on the Outlook Address Book tab, check the
box that says "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book"

K. Orland,
Thank you for the heads up about this tool that I was not familiar. I had
him 'repair' his PST file but this did not solve the problem. I do have
another solution to try from Brian and hopefully this one will work. As a
last resort I can use my admin acct to delete his acct and profile from the
computer and set him up with a new acct under a modified name but this is
not the desirable solution.
