Outlook 2003 "Check spelling as you type"

I was just upgraded at work from Outlook 2002 to 2003. The useful
feature of spell checking while typing seems to have disappeared. I
have looked in all the usual places (Tools -> Options -> Spelling) to
no avail.

There is an awful option to use Word as the email editor, which I
cannot bear to use even tho it does spell checking while typing.
Please tell me there is another way.... preferably the old way.

Outlook's editor has no spellcheck-as-you-type feature. Only when using
Word does that work. If you usgraded Outlook but not Word, that explains
it.
