Outlook 2003 can't talk to a plain IP address??

I am connecting with outlook 2003 through a VPN connection. In mail setup, I have to specify my exchange server's IP address because a dns lookup will result in the exchange server's external address, which won't accept outlook connections.

The problem is that outlook 2003 does AUTOMATIC name lookups on every IP address you enter into the exchange server field. What registry entry do I have to modify to get Oulook 2003 to communicate JUST with the IP address and not automatically replace it with a DNS name that looks up to a different IP?

Thanks in advance for any throughts and responses..

Add the internal IP-address with the name of the Exchange server to your
hosts-file. Redo your Exchange configuration. If it doesn't work open a
command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns and try again.
