Outlook 2003 and Vista

Mr. Valentine: Sir, I have read your posts to "Max" and tried your
suggestions to no avail. Still can't get Outlook 2003 to work with Vista. I
went to the "site" you noted and printed out the instructions. I must be
doing something wrong or don't understand the instructions. Can you be very
specific (and very simple) for a step by step (in dummy terms) in helping me?

Start at the beginning with more information.
Was this a new, clean installation of Vista or an upgrade?
How did you install Office 2003?
How did you configure Outlook after you installed Office?
What exactly happens when you try to use Outlook?
 
I purchased a new Dell computer that came with Vista. I have the original
CD's for MS Office Pro 2003 which has Outlook on it. (in the software suite)
I used the CD's to install MS Office Pro 2003 on the new Dell computer. The
software worked EXCEPT for Outlook. When I try to start Outlook a message
comes up to try starting in safe mode. The a message comes up saying "
Business contact manager has stopped working. Windows will close program and
notify you if solution is available." Then the program closes. I can always
replace my contacts if I could just get the program to work (open). Thanks
for any help you can offer.

There is still a lot of information missing. OEM's like Dell often load
their PC's with trial versions of software. Did you happen to check whether
Dell put a trial version of Office or Business Contact Manager on this PC?
Either would prevent your installing Outlook successfully and would explain
that error message. If so, your only recourse will be with Dell's support.
They created this problem.
Did you receive any error messages when you tried to install Office from
your old CD's?

I'll try this again. Dell did NOT load any trial versions of Office or
Contact Manager. I removed MS Office Works that did come with the computer
since I had Office Pro. I just seems that if the entire suite worked with MS
XP that it should work with Vista. I had no problems or error messages when I
loaded Office on my new computer.

Sorry. This just doesn't fit with reality. Only you could know how Business
Contact Manager could be throwing an error message if it was never
installed. Office 2003 does not include BCM. There is more to this story
than you have been able to reveal. It does not sound like an issue we can
solve in this newsgroup without more accurate information.

It seems you are correct about BCM and Office 2003. I just pulled out my disc
and there was a "flyer" in the case that showed BCM included for 30 day
trial. That said, I still am unable to open / use the regular Outlook that IS
include in Office 2003. I tried downloading a "patch" from MS that was
supposed to solve problems of compatability with Vista and Outlook 2003.
Unfortunately, it went through all the motions (120+ MB) of downloading then
said it was unsuccessful. I'm ready to pull my hair out. I know that when I
had MS XP that Outlook was fully functional. I have a feeling that Vista is
the problem and just can't seem to find a solution. Sorry I'm not very
computer literate, but I am trying. Thanks for your time sir.

It sounds like you made an error when installing Office 2003. Do you
remember any error messages or prompts? Is it possible you installed the
trial version of BCM after its expiration date? Why not use the Office
Maintenance Wizard to completely uninstall Office 2003, then reinstall it
after a reboot.

Eureka!!!! I found it with YOUR help. I went to MS download pages and
downloaded BCM for Outlook 2003 plus a service pak 1 patch for same. After
that I tried opening Outlook and there it was. Everything in it's place.
Thanks to you I was able to think a bit clearer and find the solution. I
couldn't have done it without your help because you brought up things I had
not considered. THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
