Outlook 2003 and MS Fax

I recently upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2003, and I'm not sure
how to send faxes using MS Fax included in XP. This does not appear to
be covered on Slipstick's page on integrating the two:

When I print something to the Fax driver, the console still opens, but I
don't connect into Outlook's address book anymore. Is there a how-two on
this subject somewhere, or an FAQ? Many thanks!

It should all apply. Outlook 2002 and 2003 are no different in this regard.
Post your upgrade path (from which mail support mode did you upgrade?) and
the steps you are using to send the fax so we can troubleshoot. Is the
Outlook Address Book configured and functioning correctly in Outlook 2003?

I had been using Outlook 2000 in IMO, but (after upgrading to XP last
year) had NOT installed the Symantec Starter stuff. Think the Outlook
Address book is configured and established. I use OE for my classes that
I take over the Internet, and it can see Outlook's address book. (Had to
turn the address book sharing back on, which wasn't hard once I figured
out WHERE you go in OE to do that!)

So, if OE can see Outlook's address book, I can't figure out why XP's
Fax can't see it. Been poking around in the Fax console to try to find
some setting on address book sharing like I found in OE. No luck so far!

When I want to send a fax, I usually 'print' to the fax driver. This
opens the console's fax send wizard. In that, there was a button you
pressed to open Outlook's address book. That is now missing. I have
tried removing and re-installing XP's fax, and no change.

The page there mentions the 'Fax Mail Transport' service, but the
directions for installing that do not match what I see in Outlook 2003.
They mention installing this via: Tools | E-mail Accounts | Add a new e-
mail account | Additional Server Types | Fax Mail Transport. However,
there isn't an option to add 'Additional Server Types' in my menu. So, I
think I know what is missing. Just not sure how to get it in there!

Oh, dear. Upgrades from IMO are always trouble. It's very unlikely you were
left with an intact Outlook Address Book. Indeed, it should not have been
possible to share the Outlook Address Book at all in Outlook 2002 or 2003
unless you had made a deliberate change in the registry, so your old IMO
profile was/is still running.

Start over with a clean profile. Add the Outlook Address Book Service and
configure it to use your default Contacts Folder. If you still need to share
with OE, we can fix that later. We need to get your Outlook Address Book
fixed first.

Okay, let me rephrase this to see if I understand what you're saying. I
need to copy my existing PST file over to Backup status, and all other
accounts & rules. Then, I wipe out my existing files and start over
fresh and import info from those stored backup files. How do I do that?
Wipe out the PST files and stuff from where Outlook has them stored,
then restart Outlook?

No, I'm not worried about restoring sharing in OE. I got my notes saved
on THAT process! It's fixing the faxing problem that is what I need to
do...

Stop! No. Nothing like that. Creating a new profile is a simple,
straightforward process. All you need to do is take note of the name and
location of the PST file that Outlook is using (Properties of the Root
Folder in Outlook) so you can use it in the new profile. All your data will
be perfectly safe and untouched.
Take a look at this MS KB article, it may help (Outlook 2002 and 2003 are
the same for this process):

Got the new profile created, and (after a few tries) got it using my old
PST file. It has both the Fax Mail Transport listed in the e-mail
section, and the Outlook Address Book under Directories. Both are set at
MAPI type. So, this is progress, I think!

Still nothing showing in Fax Console, or in Sending Fax Wizard, so I
must still have something wrong. Do I need to change how I send faxes
from inside programs?

Oh, oh... No contacts are appearing in a new message! Error message says
something about the Contacts folder being missing or having moved or
something along those lines. I can see them in Outlook when I click on
the Contacts button though. So, they are there still in the PST file.

RE: MAPISVC.INF

There are 2 listed. One in lowercase letters and a filesize of 1KB in
the WINDOWS\system32 folder. The second created today shown with name in
uppercase letters, with a file size of 18KB, here: C:\Program Files
\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\MAPISVC.INF This is the one that looks
like it has all of the right info in there. I'm going to shut down my
system and reset to see what happens to these...

You still don't have a functioning Outlook Address Book. Perhaps you made a
misstep with the new profile and its PST file. It will be easy to fix.
Just remove the Outlook Address Book from your current Profile. Restart
Outlook. Add the Outlook Address Book Service back and direct it to your
Contacts Folder.
 
Well, no change, so now I need to figure out what happened within
Outlook...

Okay, got that fixed. Now I have 2 listings for 'Contacts' when sending
messages, and the bottom one is the one with the info in it. Not sure
how to delete the extra one right now. Geez! Get one thing fixed and
make a new problem! Going over to hunt for some more clues on fixing
this...

Okay, that fixed a lot of things. Only one entry for Contacts now when I
go to send a new message, and it shows only those in the Contacts
folder. I've lost the Business Contact Manager database, but I haven't
even STARTED figuring out how to use that. Tabling that for now.

Hummmm... No change in XP Fax... I'm going to have to come back to this
tomorrow. Thanks for all the help so far. Think I'm making progress!

In Control Panel > Internet Options, is Outlook listed as your default mail
program and default Contacts manager?
I know nothing about BCM. Never seen it or used it.

Yes, Outlook is still listed in both spots. It is labeled as Microsoft
Office Outlook now...

BCM is the included Business Contact Manager that came with Office 2003
that is somehow going to help me link other programs - such as my
Quickbooks - so info is shared. I don't know a lot about it, or if it is
intended to replace the contact folder in Outlook. Like I said, tabling
that matter for now...

Yes. I know what BCM is. I just haven't had the time to use it. I doubt it
is in play here.

Didn't I already do this once? Do I need to do this again? Still no
change in what is shown in the Fax Send Wizard. Maybe remove & reinstall
XP Fax?

You didn't do it if you still have two references to Contacts in your
Outlook Address Book with one of them being invalid. That means you still
have a corrupt Outlook Address Book Service. The Outlook Address Book
Service must be installed and working properly before the Fax Service will
use it. I've never seen reinstalling the Fax Service to be necessary once
the Outlook Address Book Service was installed and configured as the default
messaging and Contact service.

Well, I do have only the one reference to Contacts showing now. Also,
Outlook is defaulting to that view when I am writing new messages or
forwarding them. (Nice) I've also noticed that it lists 'Fax Services'
as one of those things it is doing when I manually tell it to
send/receive.

But, no change in the Fax Wizard when I try to print to the Fax printer
driver. I'm still stuck there....
